Scene 1: Scrooge’s Counting House
[SCENE START]
INT. SCROOGE’S COUNTING HOUSE – DAY
The year is 2024. Inside the gloomy counting house of Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly old businessman, two clerks, BOB CRATCHIT and TIM, shiver at their desks.
It’s freezing in here, Tim.
I know, sir. But Mr. Scrooge won’t let us have a fire.
He’s a heartless old man.
Suddenly, the door to Scrooge’s private office creaks open, revealing the old man himself. He is dressed in a long, black coat and has a cold, piercing gaze.
Cratchit!
Yes, sir?
Is that boy still outside?
Yes, sir.
Send him in.
Cratchit nods and goes to the door. A moment later, a young boy enters the counting house.
Mr. Scrooge, sir?
Yes, what is it?
I’m from the local orphanage, sir. We’re collecting donations for Christmas dinner.
(Scoffs)
Bah! Humbug! Christmas is a waste of time and money.
But, sir, it’s Christmas. It’s a time for giving and sharing.
Nonsense! Why should I give to charity? I have nothing to gain from it.
(Sadly)
I see. Thank you for your time, sir.
The boy turns to leave.
Wait!
The boy turns back.
How much do you want?
(Surprised)
I don’t know, sir.
Five pounds. That’s more than enough for a decent Christmas dinner.
(Gratefully)
Thank you, sir. You’ve made our Christmas.
The boy leaves the counting house, beaming with joy.
(To Scrooge)
That was very kind of you, sir.
(Gruffly)
Don’t be ridiculous, Cratchit. I’m not in the business of giving away money.
But it’s Christmas, sir.
And what of it? Christmas is just an excuse for people to be lazy and spend money they don’t have.
